Now that everyone is moving their gym routine into the home, we thought it would be a good time to talk about the considerations in setting up your home gym. In this week’s blog we will cover the 3 steps to building your home gym.
1. Planning: Budget and Space
When planning your home gym, ask yourself the following questions:
Where in your home will you work out?
Look around your home and find the perfect space where you can be comfortable and can move your body through all planes of motion.
How big is your space?
Measure so that there are no surprises when you receive your equipment. How much and what sort of equipment can you fit in your workout space? Can you accommodate both a cardio machine and a strength machine? Keep reading for the equipment options and dimensions below.
How much can you afford to spend?
The average cost of a full gym membership is $58 a month. Which means, if you are currently paying $58 a month for a twelve-month gym membership, you will pay off the investment in a little over a year. After the first year, you’ll start saving money month after month.
Another part of the budget consideration is the quality of equipment and lifetime usage. Cheaply made equipment will cause less satisfaction, less use, the potential for injury, and a need to purchase replacements. You want equipment that is safe, stable, and will last throughout many workout sessions. Limited space, limited budget? Text us for personalized budget and space friendly suggestions. Now that you’ve gathered your data on what you want and how much you can afford to spend, let’s consider two of the pillars of a basic fitness routine: Cardio and Strength training.
2. Choose your Cardio
What do you enjoy?
The more you enjoy the activity, the more likely you are to continue your routine.
How much space do you have?
Time to pull out your room measurements.
Do you have any physical conditions to consider?
Unable to sustain standing cardiorespiratory fitness on a treadmill? Bike seats a little too uncomfortable? Not quite coordinated enough for the elliptical? Check out the chart below to find your perfect cardio fit:

Let’s face it, these are uncertain times. We all want to make the best choice for ourselves and our families. With the newly imposed expectation to practice #socialdistancing it sounds like the perfect opportunity to get fit in the comfort of your home gym.
Keep reading for some of the benefits of having your gym at home:
Reduce Germ Exposure
Commercial gyms are filled with germs. At home, you at least know who has used the equipment and can control how clean you keep it.
Time Saver
Not only can you choose workouts that best fit your schedule, you will also save time driving to and from the gym or even waiting for your favorite piece of equipment.
Wear What You Want
At home, no one is going to care whether you are wearing your pajamas or the hottest new yoga pant. Working out at home allows you the freedom to wear whatever you want.
Choose your Music
Music is an awesome motivator to get through a workout. Being at home allows you to listen to your favorite playlist at whatever volume you want. Bonus-you don’t have to wear annoying earbuds that fall out.
Save Money Long Term
Depending on how much equipment you need, working out at home will be a big money saver over the long haul. You won’t have to worry about a membership fees.
With the popularity of body weight workouts, you need only a small space to get an effective and affordable full body workout.
Many at-home fitness enthusiasts use multi-purpose equipment like dumbbells, resistance bands, a yoga/stretching mat, or kettle bells. You can pair those along with a cardio piece such as a treadmill, an elliptical, a bike, or a water rower.
While there’s obviously an initial cost for investing in equipment, over time it is cheaper than paying for a gym membership.

There are some very simple steps to keep you motivated and to keep going. Start out realistic and specific. Do not say I want to lose 50lbs in 2 weeks or just get in shape this year. Start out by possibly saying i would like to lose 5lbs by the end of this month. Next would be write your goals down. If they are not on paper and in front of you then they arent real!. make it set in stone and commit to it. You will be happy you did.
Another good way is to start being more involved with fitness related information, you will be suprised how much good info is out there and not just get fit quick diets and such. Subscribe to a fitness magazine, that way every month some kind of fitness information is right in front of you telling you to keep going. And of course another addition to keeping it in front of you is in home fitness products. For most people starting out, Cardio is the most effective way to get going. As you get your wind up then combining resistance training along with cardio you will see the greatest results. And since the biggest excuse for most people is the actual part of heading to the gym. Why not get a good quality piece of cardio for the home. That way there arent any excuses to use it.
